Learning to kitesurf is easier as as it seems: to keep the kite stable at 12 o’clock while getting the feet into the kites is something multitasking and need some practice. The shallow and flat water of Punta Trettu Kite Center & Cafè in Sardinia make easy to learn kitesurfing decreasing the learning curve normally required.

Several year ago, I got a windsurf as present. That summer I took to the water of the lac close to my city and from that moment I became a enthusiast of this sport mastering the water start, the jibe, the chop hop and enjoying all the moments of wind
Last year, in the month of May, I was in Cagliari where they were doing the Kite Foil European Champioships. It was amazing, people flying over the water with their foil kiteboard and kites. In that moment I decided to learn kitesurfing!I had a look on internet and I found KiteGeneration a very well reviewed kite school . After I sent an email, I got the reply immediately and I started my kite course for beginners few days later.
This school is changing the kite beach for lessons depending on wind conditions. During my kite course, it was blowing the wind of Mistral, one of the predominant wind in Sardinia.

The First Day of Kite Lessons at Poetto Beach in Cagliari

I started my first lesson at Poetto beach in Cagliari. In this first day of lessons, I have learned the basics of security, how to set up a typical modern kite, and after I practiced how to control the kite.

The Second Day of Kite Lessons in Punta Trettu, Sardinia

After the first day if kite lessons, I moved to Punta Trettu for the lessons in the water.
Punta Trettu, that amazing place! Located in the west coast of Sardinia, Punta Trettu, with flat shallow water, constant wind, no swimmers, is a perfect beach for kitesurfing. We can say that is Kite Paradise!
Although May, it was always sunny and the water warm enough (anyway, I used the wetsuit provided by the kite school).

The Third Day of Kite Lessons in Punta Trettu, Sardinia

In the water, I continued practicing to control the kite. It was not so easy fot me because my windsurfing instincts were hard to shake, and I often was pulling the bar too much! My instructor instructed me to control the kite with one hand and after some practice I got a good control of the kite. To make the kite fly in in the correct way is something really incredible and satisfying!
Kiteboarding combines two distinct skill groups:
  1. flying the kite,
  2. controlling the board.

After I learned to make the kite fly in the correct way, and after I learned the body drag and the relaunch of the kite from the water, it was the moment for me to try the board. I was expecting that, given my experience as windsurfer, manage the board it was something really easy. After some failed attempts to water-start, I realize that I was mistaken 🙂

The third day of Kite Lessons in Punta Trettu, Sardinia

The third day, the wind was blowing well as usual in Punta Trettu, and it was perfect to continue the water starts. We worked again on kite control and the body drag. It would skip some steps like this one, but for kitesurfing are necessary even some skills that are less than glamorous.

Progress was incredible and, even if for a few tens of meters, at the end of the day I started gliding on the water!
I really enjoyed the ride. The speed was effortless!

I will be back to Sardinia and Punta Trettu

Kiteboarding is something really exciting and fantastic, more than any other sport I’ve tried in my fife!
In three days, I accomplished what took me a lot of practice as a windsurfer. I’m not sure when my next kiteboarding adventure will take place, but I am sure I will back in Sardinia and Punta Trettu for kitesurfing again in this incredible place!
